Compare synthetic research tools by workflow and evidence
Synthetic research is a category, not a guarantee that every tool answers the same questions. Compare the response format, audience scope and evidence behind each claim.

Disclosure and selection criteria
We publish InstaSights and have a commercial interest in this category. This is a documentation-based shortlist checked September 27, 2026. It is not exhaustive, a hands-on ranking, or a comparative validation experiment. We selected three examples with distinct documented workflows: a structured consumer study, synthetic interviews and a synthetic-panel option within a broader research platform.
We have not obtained matched quotes, run the same brief on these systems or audited vendor accuracy claims. This guide identifies options and the questions to resolve, not a universal winner.
Three workflows to investigate
| Product | Workflow and outputs | Access and cost to verify |
|---|---|---|
| InstaSights | Editable structured consumer questionnaire; simulated answers, summary, audience comparisons, Excel and CSV. Standard studies allow up to ten questions; no open-text response questions. | $49.99 single study with 250 simulated consumers and a $3 drafting allowance before drafting pauses. |
| Synthetic Users | Documents audience definitions, synthetic interviews, follow-up questions, transcripts, summaries and reports. | Pricing describes annual Research Token plans starting at $12,500/year. Confirm the allowance and consumption for your intended work. |
| Qualtrics Synthetic Panels | Documents a U.S. general-population, English-language synthetic panel and labels generated records with a Synthetic response type. | Documentation specifies eligible plan/access permissions and subscription credits through an account executive. Obtain a quote; no comparable total is established here. |
Sources are linked directly in the table. Prices and eligibility are dated observations, not a quotation for your study. Check current documentation and the final purchase terms.
Let the research task narrow the shortlist
For a short consumer naming comparison with predefined answer options, inspect the structured study workflow and its exports. For exploratory conversations with follow-up questions, investigate an interview-oriented workflow. If your organization already manages research in a broader platform, check whether its synthetic option supports the actual survey and audience you need.
Do not infer support for every market, language or stimulus from a general marketing description. For example, Qualtrics’ support page lists design restrictions and warns that its synthetic panels do not understand embedded images, videos, files or hyperlinks. Check these details before assuming an existing questionnaire will transfer unchanged.
These are reasons to investigate, not recommendations to buy without evaluating the fit. A simulated transcript is still generated text, not an interview with an actual customer.
Ask for evidence relevant to your decision
Ask what the system was evaluated against, whether human reference data were independent of development, what question types and audiences were covered, and which tests failed. Request the definition behind a metric: agreement on a winning option, similarity of distributions and thematic overlap are not interchangeable.
A favorable result from another provider or a research paper does not validate InstaSights. Likewise, one product’s reported score should not be applied to an untested question or population. Use the provider evaluation worksheet to keep claims, sources and unresolved questions together.
Compare complete tasks and commitments
A per-study price, annual token pool and subscription-credit model are different units. Specify the audience, questions, expected repetitions, follow-ups, required outputs and review work before comparing cost. Include any minimum commitment and the human evidence still needed afterward.
Do not divide the smallest advertised charge by a record count and call the result equivalent value. We have no matched total-cost study here. The budget guide explains how to build a comparable scope.
Know when synthetic research is not the required evidence
If the decision requires actual customer testimony, physical product experience or measured buying behavior, choose a method that collects it. Generated responses cannot meet that requirement just because they resemble a survey export.
For exploratory use, preserve the brief, audience settings, exact questions, outputs, exclusions and source labels. Decide what a conflicting or uncertain result would mean before running. A clear next test is more useful than treating every generated finding as confirmation of the original idea.
Inspect the actual report format and the stated limitations before selecting a workflow.
